Over 25% of its 945,087 square kilometers is dedicated to game parks and reserves, offering a unique backdrop for filmmakers. The country has attracted scientists, anthropologists, geologists, and film crews for decades, with National Geographic and others regularly capturing footage of Mount Kilimanjaro, the Great Wildebeest Migration, endangered wildlife, and the cultures of the Hadzabe, Datoga, and Maasai tribes, as well as the active volcano Ol Doinyo Lengai.
Film Permits and Assistance
To film in Tanzania, a Film Permit from the Tanzanian Film Board is required. If navigating the application process seems challenging, African Remotes Explorer can assist with obtaining necessary permits, completing forms, and coordinating approval with the Tanzanian Embassy. Permits are valid for three months and typically cost USD 1,000, with expedited processing available for higher fees. Special permits are needed for filming in Zanzibar. It’s advisable to plan ahead, as infrastructure for incoming crews may require them to bring their own equipment. Filmmakers are also required to provide a free copy of the film to the Tanzania Film Board upon completion.
