Arusha National Park

Introduction

About Arusha National Park

Covering an area of just 137 square kilometers, Arusha National Park may be one of the smaller national parks in Tanzania, but it is undoubtedly one of the most picturesque. Located only 37 km from Arusha town, the park is a popular destination for day trips, offering visitors a diverse landscape and a rich variety of wildlife within a compact area.

Arusha National Park is characterized by four distinctive features that set it apart from other parks: the Ngurdoto Crater, the serene Momela Lakes, the lush highland montane forest, and the rugged Mount Meru, which rises to 4,575 meters above sea level. On clear days, visitors are also treated to stunning views of Mount Kilimanjaro, which towers at 5,895 meters to the east, adding to the park’s breathtaking scenery.

Wildlife and Birdlife

Despite its small size, the park boasts a rich diversity of wildlife. Common animals include the Abyssinian black and white colobus monkeys, Vervet monkeys, red forest duikers, hippos, elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, bushbucks, and occasionally, leopards. The park is also a haven for birdwatchers, with over 400 species of birds recorded, including Eurasian migrants that can be seen between October and April.

Unique Attractions

One of the unique aspects of Arusha National Park is the opportunity to combine traditional game drives with nature walks. Visitors can step out of their safari vehicles and explore the park on foot, enjoying the fresh air and getting closer to the natural environment. This combination of activities allows for a more immersive experience, making Arusha National Park a special destination for nature lovers.
